Blackshear Elementary on east 11th St. is one of the oldest elementary schools in Austin, and at its opening in 1896, was the first school for African-American students in east Austin. Today, the school is a registered historical site and serves 241 students, 97% of whom are economically disadvantaged.
This school plays a big role as a neighborhood center, and on 11/1 volunteers will complete beautification projects, landscaping, and updates throughout the entire school. Specific projects will include: planting trees and landscaping at the front of the school, building benches, painting indoor rooms and doors, and painting games, logos, and quotes in the outdoor spaces.
