Dylan @ Alpha Kappa Psi - Iota

I worked with the Philanthropy Director of the active chapter, Meghan Magee, to promote and advertise participation in the first annual AKPsi - Charity Talent Show. I helped her with promotions on Facebook and GroupMe, and helped facilitate active member participation to raise more money for charity. I performed in the talent show with other members to raise money for our charity, which was highly embarrassing, but we got second place! This event is going to be a great tradition in years to come, and we raised hundreds of dollars for the winner's charity of choice- Muscular Dystrophy!

Dylan @ Art in the Park- Alpha Kappa Psi

At Art in the Park, my business fraternity set up a table to make carrying bags for special needs students making crafts at other tables. All of the attendees at the event were extremely kind and humbling, and it made me really appreciate the life I have and how I can take it for granted. The fact that these people could be so optimistic and happy about life despite their shortcomings was truly admirable- it was a pleasure getting to work with them. This was also a great opportunity for me to network amongst my peers in my business fraternity to get to know them better.

Dylan @ Business Professionals of America

I was a member of BPA throughout high school, so I decided to help judge to the aid of my state advisor, Mrs. Weber, at her Regional Leadership Conference. I judged "Graphic Design Promotion" at both the middle school and high school levels, and decided who would advance to the State Leadership Conference. I wrote constructive comments to the participants, and helped Mrs. Weber as requested at the event. It was a great experience sitting on the other side, as a judge instead of a competitor! I'm so glad I could give back to an organization that was integral in composing the student and business professional I am today.

    Open opportunities at Reading Rangers

This event took me back to the time I taught English in Thailand for a summer during high school. I helped native Spanish speakers read and verbally communicate in both English and Spanish both one-on-one and then in a group setting in a computer lab. I learned about the elementary school's program in trying to easily transition the children into speaking English, and it was very insightful! The kids were great and the volunteer in charge was super sweet and open to questions. I plan on completing service hours again here next semester!

    Trash To Treasure Sale

I basically helped clean up after other volunteers had been working the "Trash to Treasure" garage sale for the day. It was in a different part of campus I had never been before so it's always amusing to see the numerous regions of this huge campus. The service wasn't anything too personally impactful for me, but simply knowing that all the money this program earns goes to supporting environmental programs at the university is fulfilling enough.

    Holiday Heroes Project

It was so much fun knowing that the letters and drawings we were creating were going to an actual infantry for a child of a faculty member at UT. I got to network with some other ULN members I had never met, and even some '17 cohort members! I hope that our effort will be enjoyed by the soldiers overseas, and it was good to contemplate how lucky I am to be able to be with my family and friends in the United States for the holidays. It was a great perk too to have able to attend the first annual holiday community service event for University Leadership Network.

    Dylan @ Salvation Army

I went to the Christmas Cheer Center and played Santa for families affiliated with the organization. The children/parents list necessities and wanted toys for Christmas and I browsed the warehouse to fill up bags full of presents and clothes for each child! It honestly made me really appreciate my Christmas's at home with my family, and I truly enjoyed being able to find toys and items that I know children and parents really need and appreciate- definitely a great way to get into the Christmas spirit!

    Dylan @ Duren Residence Hall

Each floor in the Duren Residence Hall created a certain theme- ours on the fifth floor was the "Wizard of Oz". The study lounge was decorated and I helped hand out candy to children of University of Texas at Austin students, teaching staff, and other faculty members. I really enjoyed this experience because it allowed me to see a different side of the UT staff out of an academic setting, as well as network with fellow UT peers. Service work during the holidays really brings a sense of community to this large university!
